The Reds have not particularly been rewarded for finishing top of the league phase of the competition, as they now go up a side in PSG who are unbeaten in 24 Ligue 1 matches this season and thrashed Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the previous round of the Champions League.

Liverpool, though, will believe they can halt that momentum, with Arne Slot’s side enjoying a sensational season themselves.

They sit 13 points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League title race and have already picked up statement wins over Real Madrid, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen in Europe.

The Reds are in Paris for the first leg of their last-16 tie against PSG tonight and have a number of players in the squad who have to be careful if they are to avoid being suspended for the reverse fixture.

Players who receive three yellow cards in the Champions League will be handed a one-match ban. That runs through to the end of the quarter-finals, when bookings are wiped.

For those who have already been booked at least three times, there will be a further ban for any subsequent odd-numbered caution.

Alexis Mac Allister has already served a one-match suspension in the Champions League this season but has since picked up a fourth yellow card, meaning he is one away from another ban.
